Play to Earn, a Huge Mess We All Love
Ever since the breakout of NFTs to the mainstream, multiple NFT projects had found the promise of high profitability in putting your NFTs to work, which in turn gave birth to NFT staking, and soon enough, play-to-earn games.
Play to Earn Games in essence incentivizes the player’s time and effort in grinding for in-game items and/or experience with cryptocurrencies and/or other valuable items. Most NFT games in the market follow this simple recipe and had consistently incorporated this concept to even the minute details within their network and game proper.
Amidst this relative success of Play to Earn games in the NFT market, however, it is not unbeknownst to many that there are numerous critics left and right who see Play to Earn games as a cruel and cash-grabbing way for developers to take advantage of their player base.
This begs the question, are Play To Earn Games detrimental to NFT's success?
The grinding aspect of Play To Earn games is in my opinion, an unavoidable and mutualistic feature that offers enormous benefits for both parties involved, however, most developers do not account for the sheer ability of some gamers to grind, which in turn causes a huge oversupply, which dilutes the value of the game’s cryptocurrency. Most of the Play-to-Earn games fail to account for this and in turn, cause a huge upset on the side of the player who almost always hopes for the currency they grind for to remain at a fairly high value.
Another important aspect that Play to Earn game developers fail to notice is the game aspect of their game. In essence, games should offer entertainment first and others second. If a game is not enjoyable, players will refrain from playing it.
Most developers focus on the economy of the game and polishing it, failing to consider that entertainment is supposed to be its prime focus to retain a solid community.
Despite this, there is a huge chance that Play to Earn games will continue to persist in the years to come, possibly as long as there are NFTs, so how these developers present the game will all in all add or chip away at NFT’s success.
